Scoliosis is a disorder which affects the backbone of an individual. The spine looks fine when viewed from the sides, but then as soon as one view from the direct view, it looks curved. Individuals who are affected with scoliosis have changes in the shape of the backbone in the form of the C or S shape. Individuals with scoliosis are likely to pass on the features of the scoliosis in their children too. One must note that the disorder of scoliosis occurs more commonly in girls as compared to the boys. The reason behind this is still not found. There are several medical terms of scoliosis based on the curvature and changes which are found in the spine or backbone like kyphoscoliosis, dextroscoliosis, rotoscoliosis, thoracolumbar as well as levoconvex. This disorder changes the shape of the backbone to the right, left or even in a rotational form. It creates discomfort for the individuals in various daily activities. In some of the cases, the thorax and lumbar regions are also affected.

Here are some of the common signs and symptoms of scoliosis:

— A rotating spine

— One shoulder is lower than the other.

— One hip is higher than the other.

— The individual has a regular problem in breathing properly due to lack of desired space in the chest area.

— Uneven waist.

Most of the symptoms in the case of scoliosis are visible. Therefore, it is essential to ensure that these type of signs and symptoms are not ignored. In case of children, parents need to monitor their behavior and body language. It will help them to detect these symptoms and get in contact with the doctor on time.

There are mainly three types of scoliosis:

Functional: Here the spine is healthy. But the posture of the individual is affected due to some defect in one of the other parts of the body. It can be due to shoulder or legs asymmetry.

Neuromuscular: In this type of scoliosis, the main problem is in the formation of the spine. It is a severe form of scoliosis. There is an incomplete formation of the bones of the spine when the child is in the mother’s womb. It makes the posture of the child change since the time of birth. It occurs in individuals who are detected with Marfan’s syndrome, cerebral palsy, congenital disabilities and muscular dystrophy. This type of scoliosis requires more amount of time and efforts to get treated than other types of treatment.

Degenerative: Degenerative type of scoliosis is usually found in elderly individuals. One of the main causes is the presence of arthritis. The ligaments and the supporting structures are weakened in such cases. It leads to the deterioration in the strength and functioning of the spine. The backbone of the individual is also affected due to the disc degeneration and osteoporosis.

The treatment of the patients with scoliosis depends on the type and the severity of the case. The patients with a functional kind of scoliosis are usually made to walk with a small wedge on the side with a shorter leg. It helps the individual to walk in a straight manner without bending on any one side. In case of the neuromuscular type, the patients suffer to a great extent. The condition worsens with time. Therefore, the doctor usually recommends the patient to undergo surgery before the condition worsens to a further extent. Various types of exercises, stretch, relaxation techniques and nutritional supplements are advised to the individuals.

If you find your family member or child with the symptoms of scoliosis, then it is essential to take some precautions and prevent it from worsening. Activities like heavy gym sessions, weightlifting, lifting bags only on one side as well as activities which cause twists and turns of the back should be avoided. It is always recommended to prevent delaying and consulting a physician at the right point of time. There are no specific ways to prevent scoliosis. But you can take a good number of measures to ensure that this disorder does not affect you in the long term. Proper self-care and appreciating lifestyle will help you to achieve your goals and avoid any significant adverse effects of scoliosis.
