Prof. Dr. Ali Uğur URAL graduated as second in his class from Gülhane Military Medical  Academy in 1985. He became a specialist in Internal Medicine in 1993 and completed his  subspecialty training in Hematology in 1995. He was appointed Assistant Professor in 1996,  Associate Professor in 1998, and Professor in 2004. 

In 1996, he conducted Hematology research at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in  New York and later in 2001 at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, focusing on  “Bone Marrow Transplantation, Gene Transfer to Target Cells, and Stem Cell  Differentiation.” 

At the Gülhane Military Medical Academy, Prof. Dr. URAL concentrated on patients  undergoing autologous and allogeneic bone marrow transplantation. He also founded the  “Stem Cell and Cancer Research Center” within the R&D Department, where he led  molecular research on cell culture, production and differentiation of hematopoietic and  mesenchymal stem cells in both animal and human models, and their use in tissue repair. He  trained many researchers in these areas. 

In 2009, in collaboration with the Gastroenterology Department, he was the first in Turkey to  use mesenchymal stem cells in human liver cirrhosis. He has also conducted experimental  studies on the use of mesenchymal stem cells in conditions such as Wilson’s disease, Crohn’s  disease, and atonic bladder.
