You are given a fresh diagnosis of breast cancer if the opposite, untreated breast also develops cancer (but not elsewhere in the body). This is not the same as a return of breast cancer.If breast cancer reappears, it could be:
Local: The primary tumor’s breast or chest region is where cancer recurs.
Regional: Lymph nodes in the armpit (axillary lymph nodes) or collarbone region, close to the original tumour, experience cancer recurrence.
Distant: Breast cancer spreads to organs other than the primary tumour, such as the lungs, bones, brain, or body. This is stage 4 breast cancer, often known as metastatic cancer.
Risk factors associated
Recurrences can occur in everyone who has been diagnosed with breast cancer. Your chance of cancer recurrence is influenced by a number of variables:
Age: Breast cancer recurrence is more frequent in women who are diagnosed before the age of 35.
Cancer stage: The stage of the disease at the time of diagnosis is related to the likelihood that it may return. Cancer stage is determined by a number of variables, including tumour size, cancer grade, and cancer spread to lymph nodes or other body regions. The cancer grade describes how unlike (abnormal) the appearance of cancer cells is from that of healthy cells.
Type of cancer: It is more difficult to treat aggressive malignancies like triple-negative breast cancer and inflammatory breast cancer. They have a higher propensity to return and spread.
What causes breast cancer recurrence?
Killing cancer cells is the aim of cancer therapy. But cancer cells are challenging. Tumors can be reduced by treatments to the point that testing can no longer find them. After treatment, these damaged cells might still be present in the body. The cells develop stronger with time. They recommence to expand and proliferate. Even removing a cancerous tumour through surgery isn’t always successful. Before surgery, cancer cells may spread to adjacent tissue, lymph nodes, or the blood.
Chances of recurrence of breast cancer after Mastectomy
The five years following a lumpectomy are the most prevalent for local breast cancer recurrences. Within 10 years of receiving the whole treatment, there is a 3% to 15% likelihood of breast cancer recurrence following mastectomy. Later-applied radiation therapy may assist to lower the risk. The likelihood of developing breast cancer again varies from person to person. There is a 6% chance that cancer in the axillary lymph nodes may return in the following five years if the doctors failed to detect it during the initial surgery. Recurrence of cancer is one in four likely if axillary lymph nodes are malignant. This risk drops to 6% if radiation therapy is given after the mastectomy.
